![]() This made me think about everything I had played so far. But even still, there was a constant sense of foreboding and dread that I felt throughout playing the game. When Sam and Lonnie discuss that they actually felt Oscar’s presence around the house followed by their Ouija board experience where they actually attempt to talk to Oscar, it was clear that they were just playing around. It was soon clear that this was not the case, but as I uncovered more about Oscar, that creepy feeling only compounded every minute. First of all, the game has brilliant sound design and visuals that really made me feel at the beginning of the game that I’m in for a haunted house game. Now the game itself is a more dramatic experience so it foregoes all of the above for a more heartfelt story that it chooses to tell and succeeds.īut what if it decided to dig deeper into Oscar’s story instead? We may have had a horror classic on our hands.Īs I moved around the house and slowly began to discover newspaper clippings about Oscar, there was something inherently creepy about it all. Clearly, the man had a legacy in his house and most of his story is still shrouded in mystery to many. We also know that the house is known as ‘The Psycho House’ and both Sam and Lonnie snooped around the house and found all sorts of hidden paths, secret cabinets and documents that Oscar made. There are many clues to the fact that Terry may have been sexually abused by Oscar at a young age which shaped the kind of novels he wrote and the fact that Oscar gave away his house to Terry in guilt and died alone. We know he’s the original owner of the house, owned a pharmacy back in the day that he abruptly gave away and had Terry as the sole heir to everything of his. Through various items around the house including notes and books, Kaitlin finds out the backstory of the members of her family - her father Terry who was a failed writer who got a chance at redemption, her mother who may have been romantically involved with a co-worker but came around later, and most importantly her sister Samantha and her forbidden relationship with her classmate Lonnie and the bittersweet ending that it receives.īut then there’s Oscar Greenbriar, who’s the real ‘mystery’ of the game only because he’s the only character in the game that the narrative doesn’t let us know much about but instead lets us piece little hints together. But when she returns, she finds the house empty with a message from her sister Samantha asking her not to try to dig deep into things. The game follows Kaitlin Greenbriar as she returns home after a yearlong trip across Europe.
